Ode to the Golden Arches

Like a beacon you shine, bringing forth your golden light from along desolate highways.
You offer warmth and familiarity, food and drink, and a place to rest and recuperate.
Some of my earliest memories have you as a backdrop.
You have always been there for me.

As a child, my father rescued me from a foul green porridge I was to be force fed, and where else would he take me but to see you.
A Filet O’ Fish was a most welcome sight that day.

I rose to the challenge of the Big Mac song: two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese, pickles onions on a sesame seed bun, and would sing it often with pride. Getting to the bottom of a vanilla shake is bittersweet, as the straw sings its warning song that the end is nigh.

When I eschewed bread, you gave me salads. You sprinkle magic on your McDouble. When I arrive midday in need of coffee, you are always willing to brew a fresh pot, just for me.

Your vanilla soft serve takes a back seat to no one. No one.

You are ubiquitous, so when nature calls, suddenly, urgently, I always look for you.

You, McD’s, have always had my back, and I will always have yours. There will be naysayers, there will be those who mock you, there will even be those who deny you, but in the end, you will prevail. You are a behemoth, yet you are here, locally, offering me your free WiFi.

Long may you reign.
